In 1937, the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) painted one of his most famous works, entitled ºGuernicaº. It was a response to the German bombing of the Basque village of Guernica in northern Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). It was exhibited in the Spanish pavilion at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1937.
